In India, different professionals use different battery of tests for diagnosis, the most common one being the Woodcock Johnson III – Tests of Achievement. Indian adaptations of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) III, WISC – IV India Edition and Binet-Kamat Test of Intelligence are the commonly used Intelligence Tests.
Based on the child’s age, we use a comprehensive battery of tests to evaluate key areas for diagnosis:
WISC-IV (Indian Adaptation): Ages 6–16 (Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, Processing Speed)
WISC (Indian Adaptation): Ages 5–15 (Verbal IQ, Performance IQ)
Binet-Kamat Test: Mental Age 3–23 years
WAIS-IV: Adult Intelligence (India)
Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test: Ages 5–10 (Perceptual Age)
Ann Arbor Learning Inventory: Ages 5–14 (Visual, Auditory Processing, Visual-Motor Coordination)
CTOPP-2: Ages 4–24 (Phonological Processing)
GORT-5: Ages 6–23 (Oral Reading)
WIST: Ages 7–18 (Word Identification, Spelling)
TOWL-3/4: Ages 7–17 (Writing Skills, Spelling, Punctuation)
WRAT (Expanded & WRAT3): Ages 5–24 (Reading, Spelling, Comprehension)
Woodcock Johnson III – Tests of Achievement: (Writing, Math, Quantitative Reasoning)
Woodcock Johnson III – Tests of Cognitive Abilities: (Memory, Processing Speed, Working Memory)
Unfortunately, the assessment process in Mumbai is over-stretched and there may be a long waiting list. We appreciate that this can be very frustrating, but there is really nothing to replace a professional one-on-one assessment by a trained Dyslexia professional in order to get a full and accurate picture of the nature of your child’s Dyslexia.
A proud achievement for the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association, DALI (Dyslexia Assessment for Languages of India) was launched on October 15th, 2015, by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister for Science & Technology.
With an estimated 35 million children in India potentially affected by dyslexia, the lack of standardized tools in Indian languages has made screening and diagnosis challenging—until now. Developed by the National Brain Research Centre, DALI is the first indigenously created dyslexia screening and assessment tool, available in Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, and English, with more languages in development.
DALI includes screening tools for teachers and assessment batteries for psychologists, standardized across 4,840 children. This project, led by Prof. Nandini Chatterjee Singh, was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The tools are available for free download at: http://14.139.62.22/DALI/index.php.
